Sun Microsystems recently unveiled the newest version of OpenSolaris (2008.11). What’s new? This version includes Time Slider, a graphical user interface to ZFS where you can take snapshots of your files and compare them over time. It also sports Gnome 2.24, FireFox 3, and Tracker, a desktop search tool. If that’s not enough for you, there is also a new feature to suspend your desktop session and resume it using RAM. But that has limited hardware support for some Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba laptops as well as Sun’s Ultra 20, 24, and 40 Workstation.
And speaking of Toshiba, it will be coming out with OpenSolaris installed on some laptops in early 2009.

Toshiba ships the Tecra R10 with Windows Vista Business as standard, and this operating system comes with its own performance measurement tool, the Windows Experience Index. Under this, the Tecra achieved a score of 3.8, but this was pegged back by the system's low score for 3D gaming graphics due to the integrated functions in its Intel chipset. For each of memory, graphics and hard disk performance, the Tecra scored over 5, where 5.9 is the maximum

Okay. I hear you. Sun is losing the stare-down battle with IBM. Regardless, I have used a Toshiba Tecra in the past and really enjoyed it. Granted, my online gaming is limited to chess and blitz chess. So the limited 3D gaming graphics score did not detract from its usability.
