Greenplum delivers petabyte-size analytics for EMC

 

Greenplum, a database and analytics provider, has certified Greenplum Database on EMC storage area networks to bring petabyte-size analytics to the EMC Clariion and Symmetrix product lines. So, what’s the big deal right?

Greenplum Database has the ability to store and analyze terabytes and even petabytes of data using clusters of commodity x86 servers, storage and networking. The database brings processing power close to the data, where query and load performance is optimal. And, Greenplum Database makes it easy to incrementally add storage capacity and processing power as needed, avoiding costly hardware upgrades. As a software-based solution, Greenplum Database aims to be data center friendly, supporting heterogeneous environments including Sun Microsystems Solaris (x86) and Linux.

Open Text teams with Recommind for early-case assessment

With the drive to reduce e-discovery costs, it's nice to know "what you got" before it's gone. And to answer that question, an early case assessment tool is in order. That's why the enterprise content management provider Open Text partnered with Recommind to use Recommind's Insite Legal Hold application to make an early case assessment feature available in Open Text's e-discovery offering.

E-discovery vendors that continue in this competitive marketplace, and in these lean times, will need to cater to customer needs that demand ubiquity and mobility. Toward that end, Exterro announced FusionGo for the BlackBerry and iPhone. It hopes to support other smartphone models by March 30, 2009.

FusionGo aims to provide legal teams with a subset of Exterro Fusion that contains mission-critical features that include the ability to: view legal holds; receive real-time updates and access to matter and custodian information; and approve actions, upload information, and manage litigation hold and other e-discovery tasks. Exterro made FusionGo with the same functionality as the Web-based version of Exterro Fusion with the added capability of taking it to go.

On Google, bandwidth and net neutrality

Scott Cleland, president of Precursor LLC and chairman of NetCompetition.org, published an estimate of Google’s U.S. consumer Internet usage and cost and hypothesized that Google is the largest user of Internet bandwidth where its use is far greater than its costs.

This may be a reason you see Google on the hill advocating for net neutrality. After all, a pay-as-you-go model certainly wouldn’t appeal to those at the all-you-can-eat counter.

If you don't hear much about digital dictation systems, you're not listening. As lawyers, we know the value of both the spoken and the written word. But only a few of us know the efficiences of going from the former to the latter with digital dictation systems from the likes of BigHand, Verdatum, and Winscribe.

Digital dictation systems continue to make their way into law firms in North America, replacing old analog systems and establishing new law firm services. Ridout & Mayee LLP, a Candadian intellectual property and technology law firm recently implemented BigHand's Digital Dictation system. And Orgain Bell & Tucker, a Texas firm with multiple state offices, rolled out Verdatum's system. Both hope to see improved efficiencies in workflow to generate content from speech.
